It’s the Little Things That Mean a Lot

in World of Warcraft

After having studiously avoided reading any consolidated PTR patch notes (reading excerpts and analysis is impossible given all the blogs out here!), I took the time to peruse the Official Patch 2.4 Notes while I ate my breakfast this morning.

All very interesting (I’m going to hate logging in today to figure out which of my eleventy-seven add-ons are borked beyond recognition, of course): The new content sounds great (hopefully LOTS of non-instance quests on the Sunwell Plateau), none of the class changes seem like they’re too nerfy or imba. Buying PvP gear in Shattrath should rock. The changes to the UI, including notes on the Friends list, opting out of group loot (for example, if a party member has to go AFK), combat log changes all are very welcome (of course, this means my date with WWS will be postponed a bit).

But there is one change I’ve been clamoring for (maybe not in this blog, but my Skype-mates will attest) that seems very small, but to me is huge: Hunters: Track spells will now persist after death.

Let me say that again in case you missed it: Hunters: Track spells will now persist after death.

Elune be praised!! At least now I can anticipate getting ganked as I try to hotfoot it from the Dun Baldar GY back down to Frostwolf, because I’ll be able to see the red dots on my screen.

Yes, I am a huntard in at least one respect: I simply can NOT remember to recast Track Whatever after death. (Small caveat: In one extended AV  or AB match on Sunday, I died so often, I finally figured out to (a) cast Aspect of the Hawk just as I rezzed; and (b) immediately recast Track Humanoids before mounting. Go me! Of course, I promptly forgot all about that in the next BG.)

I’ve been playing a hunter since beta. I have taken two to 70. I’ve run the STV quests way more times than I care to think about; ditto for Uldaman. You’d think by now Tracking would be second nature. You know, I’ll be happy to have Track Dragonkin up in Alterac Valley: At least I’ll have something being tracked.

My only question is, why wasn’t this done when all the other changes to tracking/finding were made to persist after death? Huh? Sheesh.

I usually don’t activate trackings unless I’m trying to avoid the other faction or trying to find mobs to kill or avoid. The reason being I like my mini-map clean so I can see where I’m going.

However, I do find it useful in instances so I can anticipate what kind of mobs I will be facing down the next tunnel.

I always use Track Hidden… that way the minimap is clutter free, and hey, maybe it helps detect those pesky rogues. Besides, if IRCC track humaoids doesn’t track stealthers(nor does track hidden, but it lets you see them easier). Since I pretty much leveled the whole time with that on (pvp server) I usually don’t forget…and usually when you do realize you forgot to turn it on, it’s too late!

I’m usually on Offense in AV; Track Humanoids helps me see if Horde are zerging our caps in FW. Otherwise, I generally track something that won’t fill my screen with dots. ;)

@Luke: So Track Hidden really reveals stealthers?? I know it’s supposed to, but I’ve never had any luck with it (of course, my flares never land where there’s a stealther, either). ;)

I’m most excited about opt-out looting and summoning into instances.

also? I LOVE tracking. so much so that I find it hard to play other classes.

Kestrel Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 15:27

Oh shoot! I totally forgot about the opt-out looting! As soon as I saw that, I had to mention it to one of my regular questmates, since we’re always changing to FFA when someone AFKs…no more! But yeah…that’s right up there with persistent tracking. :D

And of course, the summoning into instances is a Very Good Thing…as long as you have a ‘lock. ;)

@Kestrel–I suppose it may be a mental thing with track hidden, but I have caught out a few stealthers with it before. Probably doesn’t help that much, but it MAY give you that extra second to sting or mark ‘em…

Hey, it’s worth a try! I can imagine it might even be more useful in WSG, AB or EOTS.

Man, wish this worked for pallies. Always forget to turn my auras back on after death.
