In my blog reading today, I came across an article by Dinaer at Forever A Noob, discussing the progress of Normal realms compared to PvP realms in achieving the different phases of the Shattered Sun campaign. (And for Elune’s sake, do not forget the Sunwell!)
Dinaer commented that generally speaking, Normal realms are progressing faster than PvP realms. (By the way, the information he used is available for US realms as well as EU realms.)
His article started me thinking about something I’ve observed consistently as I run my characters through the Sunwell dailies, and that’s the number of Horde characters flagged for PvP. I can’t recall ever seeing a flagged Alliance character there (although I have seen some bones…).
What’s the motivation? As crowded as the quest-giver areas are (and that’s where I generally see these flagged players), it’s entirely too easy to click on someone whose PvP flag is on, and accidentally initiate combat. This is especially true at the building where the portal is: Every other minute, it seems, someone pulls either a Sunfury combatant or a demon into the building (usually unintentionally, I think–I’ve done it without realizing it more than once). And from there, hitting anyone flagged is almost a foregone conclusion.
So why are these people flagged? And why are they almost entirely Horde? Are they there directly from a battleground or arena? Or are they really there to incite a little gankage? What’s the motivation? After all, the intent of the Sunwell conflict is for the two factions to work together (for once) on a common goal.
This is why I resisted PvP for so very long: Sometimes, I just don’t get it.

I noticed the same thing on my server. Altho with several alliance flagged as well. Obviously pvp isn’t wanted there, considering if you attack the other faction the robot guards kill you. It really annoys me, as you said, near the quest givers. I’m squishie, I play on a pve server because I don’t want to pvp, trying to flag people this way stinks. Luckily the one time I accidently got flagged, the flagged hordie nearby questioned it, and when i replied just danced with me.
I play on a PVP server – Our server is doing better than the PVE server I started on – we are currently 51st (but the top Alliance progression guild has aleady cleared the Sunwell Raid)
However – I am currently only slightly past friendly with the Sunwell Offensive because it is such a pain to do the dailies on the isle. Yes I rolled on a PVP server so I should expect to be ganked occasionally. But what is the point when it is you ALONE versus 13 rabid horde players? Yeah, that’s not very fun.
So yes – I do believe all the ganking does seriously impede our progression towards the later phases.

@Jess:Ahhh…didn’t know about the mech’s taking out PvPers, but it makes sense–and explains why I’ve never actually seen any PvP going on! Thanks for the info, Jess.
@Tigersoul: I guess the Sentinels (or whatever they are called) don’t interfere on a PvP server. But you cite another reason why I couldn’t roll on a PvP server: I just want to play! Call me a Carebear, I guess. :p
Noticed a lot of flagged Alliance the first coupla days, but none lately. Horde is badly outnumbered on me server (3:1? 5:1? sumthin like that) so there’s a strong incentive to avoid world PvP. Saw some PvP break out in SM during Hallow’s end, but the numbers mismatch meant that Hordies lost interest pretty fast. But yeah, I coulnd’t understand why you’d bother when ya had other stuff to do, in either case.

People are doing the same thing on my RP-PVE server as well. In fact, they’re going so far as to stand flagged just in front of/on top of quest givers so people inadvertently attack them when trying to get to quest givers, and then get pwnt.
I don’t get it either. (Feathermoon server)

I’m on a PVP server and I’m enjoying the relative peace afforded in Outland by most folks being in the new area.

@Ratter: You know, I’ve no idea what the Alliance:Horde ratio is on Kul Tiras; I suppose there’s a way to find out? As for SM @ Hallow’s End: Yep, we had that too. (And yet people still show up flagged for raids…go figure.) However, it seemed the Horde were mostly the initiators then. The Alliance are fairly carebear on KT, if the numbers of people from my server in AV are any indication.
@Anna: Mostly I’ve seen flagged Horde outside, but I’m pretty clever about moving my camera view so I get a top-down look if needed in circumstances such as you describe.
@Gillir: Heheh…that gave me a chuckle.
Quickest check ya can do is here, but ain’t gonna swear to the accuracy. Shows 50/50 on KT. Says CC is 70/30, but a quick look around Shattrath tells me it’s really more lopsided than that.

I usually am the one who initiates combat. I like to pvp. Therefor every chance I get I try to take atleast 2 to 3 (never over 3) players at a time. Ofcourse I do my sunwell dailies while I gank.
Oh btw I’m horde.
Maybe it’s this mentality that holds us back from keeping the peace. I guess we horde are just too territorial.

@Ratshag: Ah-HAH! Knew I’d seen that before! Thanks, Ratter! Heh…I’d have guessed KT at about 50/50, judging by world PvP objectives: About half the time, they’re Alliance-controlled; the other half, Horde has ‘em.
@Dankh: Lemme guess: You play on a PvP server?
Thanks for stopping by!
I’ve noticed the exact opposite on my server. I’m horde and it seems like there are always alliance flagged. Now, I hate PvP. I hate it with the passion of a thousand fiery hells, but what I hate even more is tabbing for a target and accidentally hitting someone flagged. Can’t we all just play nice on the PvE servers? No fighting, just peace and pretty daisies. Please and thank you.
@Maitilde: Now that’s interesting. I’m going to guess your server is Alliance-heavy?
As for hating PvP: I used to be like you. Then I got infected with the BG bug.
On my Normal server (which is Horde-heavy) there is no PvP at all in the new zones. I see the odd flagged person here and there, but its so rare I have not noticed if it is usually Horde or Alliance. That’s the way I prefer it – if I had wanted to PvP all the time I would have rolled on a PvP server.

Aye! I been killing alliance since game release! If open beta pvp counts then add some change~!
Detheroc is definitely a pvp server and I love it.
Mind you however…I ONLY engage combat with lvl 70s. I don’t kill anyone below 70. It’s just too easy. I don’t believe in low lvl ganking and griefing, never understood that.
Keep up the good posts. <3 ur blog.
Sure made leveling a heck of a lot easier in the last couple weeks on a pvp server! I am taking full advantage of it.
luketheduke’s last blog post..A great time to level!
Same on Earthen Ring, where supposedly it’s 62% Horde, but when you arrive at Sunwell it’s 98% Alliance with 97% of them being flagged.
A High Warlord player I spoke with last night says it’s a game they play in hopes that you’ll accidentally flag and then be ganked back to Hell and back. I guess some of them get their kicks that way. It’s that or Hanna Montana was a re-run.
With our server’s awful lag in the new area, I really don’t see how you could PvP even if you wanted too! Doing the bombing quest is like being behind a 90 y/o on the Interstate. :-0
