New Features Added to the Aerie

I find Lester Chan’s WordPress plugins to be invaluable in helping me manage Kestrel’s Aerie.  One of my favorites is featured via the WP Plugins page here, which lists (and links) all the plugins I use. (Yes, I’m a plugin junkie in WoW as well!)

I just added a couple more of Lester’s plugins for polls and post ratings. (I’ve played with post ratings before, but serious interference with more important things caused me to abandon it.) My concern with both of these is they may inhibit people from commenting, since it’s so much easier just to "click and go." We’ll see.

I’m very interested in your feedback, and while the current poll is somewhat spur-of-the-moment, I’m curious to know if there are things here you think might be better if they were gone. :)

In other news, my search plugin has gone belly-up, so for the time being we’re stuck with the default WordPress search function, which pretty much…sucks.

Speaking of plugins:

I love plugins as well. I have never felt the urge to put up a “rate this post” plugin because I feel the # of comments I receive will be a good enough measure.

Excellent point, Aurdon. And I notice that the Ratings plugin requires more tweaking to even appear! (Of course, it took actually posting the article to see the rating option doesn’t appear.)

It turns out the Post Ratings plugin I was trying to use is apparently not compatible with my current theme, without a lot of theme editing. Since I just went through that exercise (and in doing so, learned that there are a lot of things that could be/should be implemented better in this theme) recently, I really don’t want to undertake it again.

The more I think about it, the more I am inclined to (a) go with a commercial theme or (b) write my own (or at least, heavily modify an existing, standards-compliant theme).

The problem with (a) is committing $80 – 90 dollars to something I may not be able to tweak to my nit-picky preferences. The problem with (b) is that the Force is not strong with me, with regard to php/HTML/CSS. (Of course, that means a self-built theme would be very “by the book” and thus by definition, pretty much compliant.

Well, I won’t be doing anything in that regard before October, at any rate.

Don’t worry Kestrel, I rate this post as 4 stars anyways. The picture itself is a 5 =)

LOVE the picture Kes. :)

The only thing I don’t particularly use is/was the post ratings thingy, so that’s what I’ve voted for.

I love your blog layout- very crisp, clean, and easy to navigate. I will get around to downloading some more of those plugins soon!
