I’ve just been tagged twice for two different memes. I have so many tags on me, I feel like the ugly ornament at Wal-Mart two weeks after Christmas. (That’s a joke, people.)
Faradhim, I’m sad to report I have no screenshots from WoW. I think, in the four years I’ve been playing, I have taken maybe a half-dozen screenshots. However, when I reinstalled WoW with the release of WotLK, I deleted the screenshot folder. I’m just not a screen-shooter.
Boring, I know. (You were warned!)
I can do slightly better when it comes to explaining my character names.
“Kestrel” came from Mercedes Lackey’s “Bardic Voices” series; specifically, from the second novel in that too-short series, The Robin and the Kestrel. I started using that character name in Asheron’s Call, for an alt. When Asheron’s Call II came out, I abandoned my long-time nom de jeu of “Eärendil” (from Tolkien) in favor of Kestrel; I’ve been using it ever since.
Being a bird of little imagination (“birdbrain”—there, I said it first!), I tried to maintain the bird of prey theme when I created my alts:
- Falken is a Rogue
- Talons is also a Rogue
- Kestrel’s cat is named Talon; so was his bear (when he had a bear)
- Sparverius (another Hunter) is Latin for “falcon”
- Osprey, of course, is the Priest
- Raptor is a warrior
- Peregrine is yet another hunter (originally, I was going to have one of each spec; all three, however, are Beast Masters)
- Falconer is a warlock
- Owlhawk is a druid
- Earendil maintains my old Tolkien roots, but as a Death Knight.
Originally, Kestrel was my Hunter on Icecrown. When I transferred him to Kul Tiras, he became Talonis; Kestrel was a Rogue. A few months ago, as Osprey became my main and my rogue-crush had long since passed in favor of my first love, hunter, I paid to rename Talonis to Kestrel. Kestrel the Rogue was deleted, but a cooperative GM restored him, and thereby Talons was born.
Eventually, if I actually do level up a DK (although I can’t really imagine doing so), he’ll become Raptor (more fitting than the noble Eärendil!). Not exactly sure how I’ll do that, but the Warrior would probably be deleted.
I would have loved to use the names Falcon and Talon, but they were taken. Of course, in over three years on Kul Tiras, I’ve yet to see either character.
Rather than tag others, I’d like to encourage all my readers to respond with how they named their main character and one or two alts. If you’re a blogger, blog about it (but please link back here!). I think it would be very cool to get 20 or 30 comments to this post. (I have over 500 regular readers; maybe we could shoot for 100??)

I love the fact that apparently you’re so boring, there’s no related articles that might be of interest here, lol. My char’s name is a portmanteau of my original char’s name (Duegan) and an elven sounding suffix (making Duegathalas). As for other names, I don’t really think about them too much. My favorite is a Tauren warr named Merryl and a troll rogue named Falafel.

Herbs are a bit of a hobby of mine, though I slipped a couple of ‘just plants’ into the mix.
Zingiber, the healer: ginger.
Urticus the hunter and his cat lyallii and scorpid dioica: stinging nettle.
What else would a Druid be but Viscum: mistletoe.
The Shaman was an opportunity to slip in a pun. Primulaveris was Tauren. (cowslip).
hmm, I can’t remember the rest any more, but you get the idea.
Thename – Is short for “The name you have chosen is already in use”, the error message I saw over and over again choosing my first character on a over-stuffed realm. Initially intended to be my main, but I never even made it to 20 on my shaman.
Muron – A huntard joke, my first 60 was a hunter and I had intended not to make him my main again, but remember how much I loved hunters again at level 10.
Druidoff – My feral druid, leveled up to be an off tank in BC, now resto.
Asara – she’s got a long story. If you want to read the whole bleeping thing, it’s linked on the sidebar of my blog under the post “Meet Asara”.
Saraabi – She’s been around long enough that I don’t remember if I intentionally named her after Simba’s mother. I know the double a was intentional though, it just seemed more.. “Draenei”.
Baella – a bastardization of Bella, because I wanted something that sort of meant “pretty” for my poor little dwarf priest.
Numae – Bit by the rehoming curse, she was originally Lunae on another server, and name-twin to hubby’s druid named Lumae. He transferred his first, and did not have to rename. When Lunae eventually followed, her name was taken, but I still wanted her to have a name similar to Lumae. The semi-connection to “Numa Numa” was an amusing afterthought.
Draevyn – My only high-leveled horde, he’s a blood elf with long black hair. Named after Eric Draven, of “The Crow”.
Mezzaluna – Named after an absolutely delicious meal I had at Olive Garden the day she was created.

Actually, I have read the whole bleeping thing about “Asara,” long ago.

Usually when I’m naming a character, I end up looking at my bookshelf, where there are many Fantasy, Sci-Fi, manga, and gaming books to garner names from. It can take a while, since there are probably no small amount of fans for any of those materials, and thus a good portion of them are taken, but every now and then you come up with a couple of gems…
(Both on Cairne)
My Shaman is named Taoren, taken from the manga Shaman King. I like the original character concept, though in thinking about it, I don’t actually play Tao like the original character (I’m almost always trying to be a nice guy, the original character was an antagonist-turned-ally and he’s pretty arrogant and cruel for a shaman in that story). It wasn’t until I was building the character that I also spotted the pun on my race as well, since Taoren is a Tauren. Go figure – sometimes it just works out.
My 2nd character is a Death Knight named Arhys, after Arhys dy Lutez from Lois McMaster Bujold’s book Paladin of Souls, from her Chalion series of books. In the book, Arhys is the March of a border keep, and having been killed in a rather odd manner, is ensorcelled to remain ‘alive’ by his obsessed wife, his spirit trapped in his corpse, animating it, for a time. The character is excellent at his arms, self-confident, a bit arrogant and flirty, and I play him like that (and that’s very much fun to do).
My 2 yen,
Akiosama
A word is worth a thousand pictures. Or was it the other way? At any rate. A great read!
Thanks!

Earendil is a DEATH KNIGHT!!!!
*cry*
Well…he wasn’t going to progress as a pally, sooo… But yeah… /shame
Oyesnake my Mage came from “Oye” the toast and Snake my nickname with the real life people I run around with.
Lythande my Pali came for the Thieves’ World novels, edited by Robert Lynn Asprin though he should be a rogue but he was my rogue/druid in D & D paper addition.
I loved the Thieves’ World books!! Probably still have some tucked away in the basement somewhere.
Yeah, birdbrains of all servers unite!
I’m a druid and Myna refers to a bird from the starling family, so much for that.
WoW-acquaintances of mine who are a rather large family in RL (brothers, sister, in-laws..) all have bird names for their main characters and most of their alts. Swallow, Sparrowhawk, Albatros, Birdie, you name it.
Woot! Birds WILL take over, there is no doubt!
Here you go Kestrel I am finally posting something.
Swissy-Short story: My friends in college gave it to me.
Long story: I was sitting in the computer lab writing off an e-mail to my mom when the girl next to me said something about too many people trying to talk to her, which piqued my curiosity, so I asked her what she was doing and she said she was MUDing, ok I think I just dated myself there, well anyway, she gave me the address and there I was sitting at a login screen asking for a name, I didn’t know what name to come up with so I asked my friends what I should name myself and they said Swissy…because I am like a Swiss army knife I had everything you would need, extra pens, paper, flashlight…ect all in my backpack. Ohh btw she is a night elf druid…she can do everything
My other toons don’t have as good as a story but here they are
Aggye-My warrior is short for my first warrior’s name which is Aggromagnes which is aggro magnet and not because I like Texas A&M….I am a Colorado girl…GO CU!!!
Elysa-My hunter. I like the name Lisa but it looked too plain so played with the spelling a bit.
Dragonflye-My warlock. The dragonfly is one of my totem animals that guards the south for me.
Sneakye-My rogue. Need I say more?
Ysbail-Who at this moment is a shammy is Welsh for spoiled…which I am occasionally.
Lavynder, Violette and Wisteria- My priest, mage and pally. I love the color purple and plants.
Evyssa-My DK still trying to remember how I came up with that name..hummm…
Woot!! Halfway there.
For those (most of you, I’m sure) who don’t know Swissy, she’s been a questing partner and guildmate since our (original) hunters were in their mid-20s. Since then, we’ve become very good friends, and spend many hours each night talking and laughing on Skype with (Astral)Kat, the third member of our fearsome trio.
Thanks so much for sharing, Swissy (and for enlightening me about the Dragonflye).
MUDs = <3
I spent many long hours on them in college. To the detriment of my grades, sadly.. but hey, I was having fun!

HA! Thanks for the warm welcome.

Hi there,
My first and my main, Amonrana, a hunter, got a random name from blizzard her cat named Temper ’cause she’s got a bad temper.
My priest(shadow) named Trymeyes (read “Try Me Yes”)from a randy type elf I played in d&d paper game, Yeah I know he’s a dwarf…heh heh
My lock, Moedots, well….’cause everyone says “moedots, moedots”. and she’s affliction
My rogue, Delthjr, Death and stealth and he’s a short Gnomie
hence the JR
Oh yeah, I also run with Oyesnake in real life and in game.
My three old mains: Khol, Mordock and Lotos…well…
Khol: Long ago and far away there was this little game called BattleTech…Khol Drake was one of my mechwarriors Black Skull Battalion. I made it originally just because it sounded cool. Khol became my rogue mostly because it sounds like a very rogue-y name.
Mordock: Less long ago, but still far away, I needed a name for a brash, loudmouth warrior. He was originally intended to be a throwaway character for a storytelling project I was working on, but he worked out so well, he stuck around for a very long time. As it happens, Mordock is my warrior and maintains the same brash, loud, hard-drinking, hard-fighting everyman sort of personality he’s had since day one.
Lotos: I make no apologies, I fully stole Lotos’ name from an old, little-known game called Meat Puppet. Lotos Abstraction is one of the coolest names in the history of ever. In the game, Lotos is on a one-woman killing spree with a really big gun. Consequently, Lotos’ incarnation in my roster is a gun-happy hunter.
Introducing…Iriandra: Iriandra is my newest main (bringing the total to four) and she takes her name from, well, the random name generator was kind.
teh Khol Abides last blogged about Intermission: Tagged by the Seventh Son of a Sixth Screenshot?
“Iriandra” – Easily the best name I know of from the RNG. Congrats on that one, Khol!
My current naming scheme revolves around my love of a particular football team – I’ve named each of my toons since this scheme started after two of my favourite players (at least until I ran out of names that sounded good). So Chapman and Rooke become Chapooke, and his pet cat is Mooney + Ablett, Moonlet.
Harley + Ling = Harling
Bartel + Selwood = Barwood
Scarlett and Hawkins, Scarhawk. I think they’ve turned out sounding ok.
Another naming convention, from my first character (sadly gone to someone-else-land when I quit forever…hahaha) – Well, I named it after a place I’d been recently that I was impressed with, the ruins of Old Sarum somewhere in England. So Sarum was my rogue, and then variations of that name – Sarumian, Sharum one drunken night, Muras all came of that one original decision. Other toons are named after book characters, composers, or one pseudolatin warlock (should have been a priest really, but gnomes can’t…) – Gnomendomini (the Gname of the Lord)
