Very interesting perspective.

Born in 77 here. My first memory of NASA and the space program was the Challenger Diaster in 1986. Perhaps that hasn't helped today's perspective towards NASA. In my opinion , the press certainly hasn't with their coverage and their "Sixth time the charm" headlines for Endeavour.

With my September, 1972 birthday I'm juuuust about at that median age. And I'm VERY disappointed in our lack of progress over the last 40 years.

Sadly, for someone my age, the space program is more about failure than success. The Space Shuttle program had such promise for little kids with big imaginations, but it didn't work out that way. Mars Rover was neat, but those memories are overshadowed by the sadness of Challenger & Columbia. And the whole John Glenn stunt.

If anything fantastic has come from our space program besides those neat pens and foam mattresses, NASA's done a great job at not promoting it. Because of that, when I (and many of my peers) see a shuttle go up, we see a sack of money that could be better spent on education or defense or anything else that's troubling our economy.

It's not that I don't want to support a space program...I just don't want to support the one we have right now.
