Christmas greetings from Kaua’i!

We had a fairly uneventful trip, considering it’s the height of Christmas travel season. We got up about 4am Monday morning, got to the airport right at 5:30 for our 6:30 flight to Minneapolis (MSP). The weather was foggy in Rapid City, so we had a very brief ground stop in Rapid…maybe 5 minutes. We got de-iced and were on our way to MSP. We had about 90 minutes there before boarding for Honolulu (HNL). Then, we ended up being about an hour late departing because they were waiting for passengers from connecting flights (thanks, big storm in the east). The last 3 empty seats on the plane were the ones in my row, of course; I thought I might have the row to myself!

Flight was uneventful, but bumpier than past flights have been, although nothing in terms of violent turbulence. We got into HNL just fine. Then they couldn’t get the jetway up to the plane…and we had a connection in another terminal in 40 minutes!! FINALLY, we got off the plane, caught the shuttle to the Hawaiian Airlines terminal, just as our plane was unloading passengers from its flight in to HNL. So we got on with no problem.

As we were taxiing out just after 6pm local time, the sun was going down…and we saw the green flash! :D (Google it if you’re unfamiliar.) So that was kinda cool, although calling it a "flash" might imply more than what it really is, and if you blink you’d definitely miss it!

Quick flight to Lihue Airport on Kaua’i, got our car, and headed for Poipu, about 20 min away. By this time it was about 7:30. We knew there was a Bubba’s Burgers (famous Hawaiian burger joint) and we found that so picked up burgers for dinner. Really tasty! (Would have been better with a Longboard lager, but we didn’t feel like trying to find a market.)

Unpacked, and sat around relaxing. Eric, Diane and Alie showed up about 10:30; Alie had slept 4.5 hours on their flight from LA, so she was full of energy. We finally got to bed about midnight (3am our time, after getting up at 4). Slept very, very well…until a rooster started crowing…at 4:14am!!! Fortunately, he shut up for a couple hours, but was definitely at it as the sun came up.

It’s a gorgeous morning here…it’s shortly before 9am, there isn’t a cloud in the sky (at least, not in the direction I can see, which is to the ocean about 200 yards away. The sound of the wind and the surf is very calming. I say wind, but as I look at the palms outside, they are barely stirring. So, it should be a great day to start exploring. Below are some shots from our deck.

It’s supposed to snow in Rapid today or tomorrow. On Kaua’i, it’ll be in the low to mid 70s, and no rain in the forecast.

As the tee-shirts say, "Life is Good!"

Aloha!
